Nowa nowa shy french e-pet

Filed under: All, Games, Doll, Toys, Product

By Mia from Popgadget

I know, I know, I’m a virtual pet murderer (that’s a murderer of “virtual pets“, not someone who strangles hamsters or something sick like that) but I kind of want a NowaNowa.
Nowa is a very shy little fairy and she only speaks French. She
startles easily so she won’t come out unless you speak to her very
gently and quietly. If she hears you, she may start moving around in
her box but will only dart her head out for a moment and then hide
again. Once you’ve earned her trust, she’ll pop out of the box and the
lid will stay open. She will speak to you until she senses you’re not
paying attention (sound detector) and then she’ll say “bonne nuit” and
go inside her box to sleep. So cute, but somewhat high maintenance, I
think.

Creepy Robot Alert

China is getting into the humanoid robot game. Baizhixing,
or “smart star”, doesn’t play soccer or have individually moving
fingers, but he can make facial expressions and gesticulate at
preschoolers. Dr Bao Qingshan, in charge of the development of this
shoeless Teddy Ruxpin at the Harbin Institute of Technology, is quoted:

“It
combines animal imitation technology and modern preschool education
theory, integrating control systems, complicated mechanical structures,
speech synthesis and expandable networking technology… All the core
technologies have been developed independently, and are equal to the
advanced techniques utilized abroad. We have complete intellectual
patent rights.”

I can’t tell if the little girl
in the photo is fascinated by Baizhixing or about to start bawling, but
the half-lidded leer the robot’s giving the camera is pretty
unnerving.

Dada Dolls made from found objects

Filed under: All, Art, Projects, Doll, Toys, DIY, Product, Storage

By Cory Doctorow:

Mindy sez, “Described as ‘Dada Dolls’, the incredible creations offered
for sale on this site are made almost entirely with recycled materials
- like dictionaries, cigar boxes, and antique tobacco tins. Each doll
comes with its own story: (example) ‘After the summer away with her
cousins in Oslo, Anna was hoping her mother would notice how short her
dresses had become, and that her figure was no longer that of a
child… ‘”
